Valentine's Day : Valentine's or Pal-entine's, Does It Really Matter That Much?
Updated: Sep 6, 2019
Valentine's day has haunted me, and I'm sure many others every single year of our existence, even when you have a partner it is a still a day of which you might dread - what to get them? are you serious enough to get them anything? Gift? Card? Puppy? So many questions, for a day you might have been misinterpreting for a while. The consuming market will tell you pretty much anything so you will spend money, remember this when you're buying your partner a teddy worth more than your life savings.
Does anyone actually really know the history behind Valentine's day?
Want me shed some light...well, it was never actually about showing your partner that you adore them on that one day of the 365 days of the year which we spin about the universe. It actually originated from the Romans who hosted a festival called Lupercalia in the middle of February, which was to celebrate the official start of their springtime.
Part of the festival was boys drawing names of girls from a box and being boyfriend and girlfriend during the festival, sometimes they'd get married, sometimes they'd go their separate ways. It was the church that wanted to turn this festival into a Christian celebration later on, as well as using the day to remember St Valentine too (how convenient, am I right?) Therefore it got twisted into a day to celebrate monogamy ~ the practice of marrying or the state of being where you think you will be with that one person for the rest of your life. I get it if you're of an age where you think you've met the love your life, I congratulate you, and say HELL YEAH celebrate the heck of today, but don't forget to celebrate your partner the other 364 days of the year too, because after all, it's just a day, and nowadays we really do have a day for everything...including National Spaghetti Day which is on January 4th, which I missed, and will defiantly be putting in my diary for next year!
Gradually, St Valentine's name started to be used by people to express their feelings to those they loved. So if you're terrified of the day because you're single, or maybe you have the 'it's complicated' label hanging over your head, please know, that it's not actually that scary. Its true meaning was about expressing your feelings to those you love, not those who you want to cuddle up with on a cold winter's night. Meaning friends, family, pets, random strangers (although I don't insist on going up to a random attractive stranger and confessing your love to them - some people people might get a little freaked out,) if you love them, just use today to just god-damn tell them.
T H E R E A L D E A L :
If you're making Valentine's day a big deal, or denying it all together, remember love takes many forms, and if you don't have that 'one special person' to spend it with, it doesn't have an impact on your worth by any means, you have so many people surrounding you who love you for you, and if you think you don't have anyone, just try and look a little harder.
